Planning smart upgrade paths
Find your actual bottleneck with data, upgrade in the right order, and know when a platform swap beats another part.
Measure before buying
In your real workload, watch GPU usage vs CPU usage (MSI Afterburner overlay for games). GPU pinned at ~99% = GPU-bound (normal, upgrade GPU for more FPS). GPU well below 95% with low FPS = CPU-bound. RAM at capacity = add RAM.
The usual order for gaming
GPU first (biggest FPS lever), then CPU when it can't feed the GPU, then RAM speed/capacity, then storage. An SSD upgrade transforms feel, not framerate.
Know your platform's ceiling
AM4 tops out at the 5800X3D/5700X3D — a fantastic drop-in upgrade. AM5 has generations of CPUs ahead of it. Intel sockets historically last ~2 generations. A dead-end platform tilts the math toward saving for a platform swap.
Check the ripple effects
A bigger GPU may need PSU wattage and case clearance; a hotter CPU may need a better cooler; DDR4→DDR5 means board + RAM together. Run any planned combo through our compatibility engine before buying.
Tip: Sell the outgoing part while it still has market value — timing an upgrade around GPU launches maximizes resale.
When to just build new
If the upgrade list hits CPU + board + RAM, you're at ~70% of a new build's cost — carry over your GPU, storage, PSU, and case, and refresh the platform.
